Seed by Seed: culture care to grow health equity

Owen, B., & Bratzke, L.
3-minute oral presentation
Wednesday 11 December, 10:40am

Purpose: Progress toward equity for American Indians has shown little improvement despite decades of health disparity research. The purpose of this mixed methods study is to co-create a  staff development tool for registered nurses (RN) in one midwestern tribal health department to decolonize practice and promote upstream nursing actions toward health equity.

Methods: Community-based research approach, sequential mixed methods study using Indigenous research methods. A community advisory board and tribal health partners guided Tribal specific context within Butterfield Upstream Model for Population Health framework. Tool was presented to tribally employed RNs at three interval options. RN feedback informed each iteration. Pre-presentation surveys captured participant demographics and critical consciousness (Sho CCS). Post survey collected quality ratings of the tool, suggestions for improvement and (Sho CSS). Tribal member interviews about tool were transcribed and analyzed.

Results:  Descriptive statistics and Sho CSS validity results will be reported. (Pre-post Sho CSS  to be completed 10/15/24). Tribal member interviews confirmed quality of tool.

A tribal specific staff development tool and accompanying presentation to enhance cultural safety for RNs was developed and given to the tribal health department.

Conclusions: A community based mixed methods study design can be used to develop tribal specific staff education intervention.
